Come Tumbling Down (Wayward Children #5) by Seanan McGuire

I’ve loved Seanan McGuire’s Wayward Children series so far and was excited for this new book to come out and it did not disappoint. Although a bit different from the others, I really enjoyed the fact this one took a distinct new take on the storyline.

The other books in the series are dark, creepy almost fairy tales focusing on children who find cracks - a wardrobe, a rabbit hole, or a simple doorway - and find themselves somewhere else. Each installment of the series so far introduced a new character or explained an existing character’s past. Come Tumbling Down is still like the other four in that it was very strange, eerie and so wonderfully written. And of course, McGuire adds these insightful comments and situations that open your eyes to being kind and understanding.

However, Come Tumbling Down expanded on Jack and Jill’s story, two characters we already learned about in book two, Down Among the Sticks and Bones. This book had a lot of action and progressed multiple main characters’ storylines, specifically the very complex relationship of twin sisters, Jack and Jill. It also was darker than the others with sacrifice, betrayal and an intense battle. I thoroughly enjoyed how this book brought together main characters from the other installments and that it switched through all of their point of views. It does make me nervous that this series will be wrapping up soon, but I am loving all these characters joining a quest together. Eleanor West tells the children no quests, but where’s the fun and danger in that?

Synopsis: When Jack left Eleanor West's School for Wayward Children she was carrying the body of her deliciously deranged sister--whom she had recently murdered in a fit of righteous justice--back to their home on the Moors.

But death in their adopted world isn't always as permanent as it is here, and when Jack is herself carried back into the school, it becomes clear that something has happened to her. Something terrible. Something of which only the maddest of scientists could conceive. Something only her friends are equipped to help her overcome.
