Our Dark Duet (Monsters of Verity #2) by Victoria Schwab

Once again, Schwab created these wonderful antiheroes in a dark and chilling adventure in this Monsters of Verity series. I’m sad it was only two books and is already over, but yet it also ended so perfectly.

Schwab did not pull her punches with emotions nor dark situations in this sequel. It starts off slowly with some introspection. August has been busy fulfilling his duty to reap souls and keep Verity a place without those who have committed violent acts. But he is struggling with this duty and what he believes is right. Kate is part of a monster-fighting group in Prosperity but is using this fight to ignore her loneliness and keep others from getting close to her.

Then, a new monster starts wreaking havoc in Prosperity and Kate realizes it’s heading for Verity next. So, of course, Kate has to follow and that’s where our story really begins again. A new Sunai also comes into play in this book which further complicates August’s struggle over duty versus what seems right. Soro only sees things in black and white and cannot understand August’s hesitance in using his powers.

The best part of this book is the last two-thirds or so where everything really races forward. There is a lot of face-paced exciting action that all ends in a very dramatic conclusion. Again, a pretty perfect ending for this dark, creepy story full of monsters. One I’d highly recommend from Schwab’s works.
